Proposed bill ready for consultation

A proposed legislation to transition the Papua New Guinea Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative National Secretariat into a statutory body is ready for public consultation beginning July.
This follows the successful conclusion of a series of consultations among legal and technical officials of key government institutions, mining and petroleum companies and civil society organisations on the elements of what is proposed to be the Papua New Guinea Extractive Industries Transparency Commission.

Papua New Guinea has reported three new cases, the National Department of Health said, with infections on the rise in the southwestern Pacific nation of 8.8 million.
The new cases, all in the National Capital District, bring the country’s total to 894 known infections. Health ministry data show the number has increased by some 40 cases in just over two weeks. There have been nine deaths.
Wednesday saw 16 new cases, 11 of which were in the West New Britain (WNB) province. The province reported its first coronavirus case in November, but infections have been spreading rapidly, standing at 194 and accounting for a fifth of the country’s total. ....

MELBOURNE, Feb 6 (Reuters) - Papua New Guinea reported three new cases of the coronavirus on Saturday, the National Department of Health said, with infections on the rise in the southwestern Pacific nation of 8.8 million.
The new cases, all in the National Capital District, bring the country’s total to 894 known infections. Health ministry data show the number has increased by some 40 cases in just over two weeks. There have been nine COVID-19 deaths.

Former domestic carrier takes on international competitors
PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (PNG Post-Courier, Oct. 11, 2011) – Airlines PNG (APNG) is increasing weekday flights between Port Moresby and Brisbane, starting with an additional Thursday service in November.
The APNG management announced that effective November 1; the airline would be operating four weekday services on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The Thursday service will replace the Sunday service.
[PIR editor’s note: Airlines PNG, formerly Milne Bay Air, has been operating since 1987. ]
We have dropped the Sunday service in favour of Thursday as customer demand has called for an addition to the weekday schedule and a reduction in demand for weekend services, said Scott Roworth, Chief Commercial Officer for Airlines PNG. ....

Heavy rain triggered a landslide near Tolukuma Mine in Saki village, Goilala district, Central province. At least 13 people were confirmed dead with a number of people missing. Continuous rain hinders the rescue and assessment efforts.
The National Weather Service is forecasting heavy rain over the weekend in the Highlands, Momase and New Guinea Islands regions. Western Highlands, Morobe and Madang provinces will also experience strong winds and possible thunderstorms. Possible flooding and landslide warnings have been issued for these regions as a result of above-normal rainfall. ....
