Crooks get license to steal impersonating MVD

Don’t fall for a fake text message that appears to come from the state’s Motor Vehicle Division asking people to “validate” their driver’s licenses.
The texts started going out earlier this month, according to the agency, and are nothing more than an effort to vacuum up Social Security numbers and other personal information. They do that by including a link that people are supposed to follow to see details and make the validation.
The texts are not coming from MVD, and the agency is encouraging people not to click on the link.
“The messages appear to be a scam known as ‘smishing,’ similar to the email scam known as ‘phishing’ but which instead uses texting (SMS) to lure in victims,” according to a scam alert. ....

Scammers' 'silly errors' can give them away

Kim Johnson of Albuquerque, the designated scam expert in his family, is thinking of starting a new hobby: Collecting the “silly errors” contained in fraudulent emails.
He was inspired recently when his inbox delivered a good one – a supposed tech-related invoice for $654. But the confirmation number was a dead giveaway that he was looking at mass spam. It said, “[-randomnumber-].”
“Many in my family ask me about whether a suspicious email is really a scam or not, so I try to keep up,” Johnson says. “I may start a collection of scammers’ silly errors to help people see the kinds of things to look for – especially the ones who are not totally comfortable with computers but use them a lot anyway.” ....
