CANDOR, N.Y. (WHCU) For nearly six decades, the Candor Emergency Squad has been volunteering to provide medical services in the Tioga County town and surrounding areas. Then 2020 and COVID-19 happened, and their resources ran thin.
Director Kelly Starkweather tells WHCU a combination of limited volunteers and more calls put a strain on their already-tight resources.
“With the lack of volunteers and dropping calls, we’ve ended up having to hire medics and drivers to be able to take care of our community. Our budget is not cut out to hire people like that. Our budget is solely based on fundraising, donations, grants received, and billing when we bill our patients.” ....
