A public interest litigation (PIL) petition was filed in the Bombay High Court on Tuesday seeking directions to the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) and the Pune Municipal Commissioner to plan a comprehensive programme for prevention, control or abatement of air pollution in and around crematoriums.
The plea was filed by Vikrant Latkar, a retired civil engineer, through advocate Ajinkya Udane. The PIL said, “The Vaikuntha crematorium near S.M. Joshi hall, Navi Peth, Pune, does not have the capacity to handle 80-100 bodies which are currently being cremated there due to COVID-19. This creates a huge amount of toxic and thick smoke as the crematorium is full and there is a load on it.” ....

Fire at Serum Institute of India, Pune mayor confirms death of 5 people | City

A fire broke out at an under-construction building at Serum Institute of India in Pune. Pune Mayor Murlidhar Mohol said that five people have died in the tragic incident. CMO Maharashtra tweeted, CM Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray is in touch with the Pune Municipal Commissioner and is taking complete on-ground updates. He has directed the state machinery to coordinate and ensure that the situation is under control. Serum Institute of India is the manufacturer of Covid vaccine - Covishield. According to sources, fire broke out at an under construction unit of the vaccine manufacturer firm and production of Covishield would not be hit as the vaccine storage unit is safe. At least five charred bodies were recovered on Thursday from the Serum Institute of India (SII) building that caught fire in the afternoon, said Pune Mayor. The mayor said that the bodies were found from the sixth floor of the building and steps are being taken for their identification.
The fire in SII broke out where the BCG vaccine is made and the Covishield facility has not been affected, said, officials. So far, nine persons have been evacuated from the building in the SII s Manjari premises. There would be no loss of Covishield production due to the fire, Serum Institute of India CEO Adar Poonawalla said. ....
