Several state highways in the South Island remained closed after the weekend s flooding. State Highway 65 from O Sullivans Bridge to Springs Junction and SH6 between Murchison and Nelson was reopened this morning, following the reopening of SH6 between Nelson and Blenheim yesterday. But SH6 Murchison to Inangahua remained closed and SH63 from Renwick to Tophouse was also closed. It may take months to fully fix Queen Charlotte Drive, the scenic road between Picton and Havelock in the Marlborough Sounds.

Buller mayor Jamie Cleine previously told Stuff the town had long been dealing with a lack of available rental properties or houses for purchase which meant there were few homes available for flooded residents. Peter Meecham/Stuff Trade Me had one rental listed in the entire Buller district on Saturday. Cleine said with “next to no available rentals” already, the concerns now were about finding somewhere for displaced families to live either medium or long-term while houses were repaired or rebuilt. O’Connor said this was the biggest flood event he had seen in Westport over his lifetime, saying it was a one in 100 year event.

Use water sparingly by keeping showers short and minimising the use of toilets, washing machines and dishwashers – all of which add load to the town sewerage system.
SH7 from the Hanmer turnoff to Springs Junction was back open by mid-afternoon on Sunday, as was SH76 from Fairdown to Mokihinui and SH1 from Picton to Spring Creek. Access to Westport, one of the areas worst affected by the flooding, and through to Golden Bay was established earlier on Sunday, with the SH67 Buller Bridge, SH60 from Collingwood to Riwaka, and SH6 from Hira to Rai Valley all reopened.
