Perhaps the most startling piece of information to emerge in today’s presentation by the Statistical Institute of Belize is that in 2018, a whopping fifty-two percent of Belizeans were living in poverty and spending less than seventy-five hundred dollars annually.  Between 2009 and 2018, poverty in Belize increased by eleven percent, with up to sixty-four thousand Belizean falling into poverty. Unfortunately, the 2018 analysis is a bit outdated, as it does not reflect the impact that COVID-19 has had on poverty in the country. The S.I.B. hopes updated data can be made available for release in a September report. ....

Belize: Export revenues up more than 10 percent

Belize: Export revenues up more than 10 percent
According to new data published by the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB), Belize’s export revenues were up more than 10 percent for the first four months of 2021. The SIB’s latest External Trade Bulletin showed that export revenues for the period January to April 2021 totaled $126.5 million, up 12.8 percent ($14.4 million) from the same period last year.
There were several export categories that saw increases in earnings, with sugar and animal feed recording the most substantial growth over the four-month period. Despite these successes, some exports still saw declines in their sales. These included citrus products and bananas.  According to breakingbelizenews.com, revenues from citrus exports declined by more than $3 million, from $15.9 million in 2020 to $12.9 million in 2021, due for the most part to reduced sales of orange concentrate. Revenue from the sale of bananas went down by $2.3 million over the four-month ....

Looking Back at the Cost of Living in March
The S.I.B. released its latest monthly figures on Wednesday indicated that Belize exported more than it imported in March.  The cost of living also inched its way upward as food and butane prices increased.  With a comprehensive look at the latest statistics here’s Isani Cayetano.

Isani Cayetano, Reporting
In March, a total of one hundred and seventy-four point eight million dollars in merchandise was brought into the country.  Along with chemical products, imports of manufactured goods increased considerably, by more than thirteen million dollars when compared to the same period in 2020.  The latest figures released by the Statistical Institute of Belize indicate that of the thirty-five million dollars spent on manufactured goods last month, most of that money was used to purchase steel pipe piles.  It simply means that notwithstanding the crushing economic situation, Belizeans contin ....

The Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Businesses
The COVID-19 pandemic has left many Belizean businesses in limbo, and a recent survey by the Statistical Institute of Belize shows just how significant the impact is across the country. A Business Establishment Survey was carried out by the S.I.B. in November of 2020; two thousand five hundred local businesses were in the sample group, which were registered either with the Social Security Board or the Belize Tax Department.  The survey reported an average thirty-five point eight percent decrease in employment between March and November 2020.  The steepest decline was seen in Orange Walk District, where business reported a sixty-six point five percent loss of staff.  This was followed by the Cayo District, where employment among these businesses fell by forty-eight point four percent. Statistician Jefte Ochaeta shares further details. ....
