BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) on Monday took suo motu cognizance of gangster SK Hyder’s death in an encounter with Cuttack police near Simulia on July 24.
The Commission has sought reports on the matter from Home Department’s Additional Chief Secretary Sanjeev Chopra, DGP Abhay, Director General of Prisons Santosh Kumar Upadhyay and Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police Commissioner SK Priyadarsi within four weeks.  ....

BHUBANESWAR: The State government on Sunday deployed 60 teams of Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) with high-end equipment at vulnerable places in the districts likely to be affected by the cyclonic storm.
The rescue teams have been equipped with 18 satellite phones to ensure unhindered communication after the cyclone made landfall. Uninterrupted communication is one of the important aspects of disaster response. Apart from the satellite phones, ODRAF teams are equipped with 190 walkie-talkie sets, said Addl DGP (Law & Order) YK Jethwa and added that the district police are also equipped with their own wireless sets. ....

BHUBANESWAR: Odisha on Saturday reported 6,647 new COVID-19 cases, following which the state s tally breached the 4-lakh-mark, officials said.
Eight more people died in the state of COVID-19, taking the toll to 1,981, they said.
The state s COVID-19 tally currently stands at 4,01,314.
Odisha crossed the 3-lakh-mark on November 7 last year, and took over five months to record the next one lakh cases. ....

Notorious gangster Sheikh Haider, who is serving life imprisonment, escaped from SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack while undergoing treatment. He escaped from ward No 5 of the surgery ward of SCB after overpowering an APR guard who was on security duty. 
He was lodged at the Sambalpur circle jail and was shifted to SCB a couple of days back after undergoing preliminary treatment for some illness from Vimsar, Burla.
Soon after he escaped from the hospital, a major combing operation was launched in the state and all exit points were sealed. The team, comprising SPs of Kendrapara, Jajpur, Cuttack DCP and other senior officials, has launched a manhunt to nab the dreaded criminal, informed DGP of Prisons. ....
