The Bay of Bengal accounts for only 5 per cent of tropical cyclones globally, but cyclones on India’s East Coast result in 80 per cent of the cyclone-induced fatalities worldwide due to the shallow continental shelf that amplifies storm surges, and a very dense population.
In India, tropical cyclones usually occur in April-May (pre-monsoon season) and October-November (post-monsoon). In 2020, there were two pre-monsoon cyclones ‘Amphan’ (a super cyclone) impacting the East Coast and ‘Nisarga’ (severe cyclone) impacting the West Coast. ....

Cyclone Tauktae is estimated to have caused losses to the tune of ₹15,000 crore, including ₹9,000 crore to the agriculture and transportation sectors, an initial assessment by RMSI, a provider of geospatial and engineering solutions, shows.

What was the intensity of the cyclone and the impact on different States?
Cyclone Tauktae is a unique cyclone event that has impacted all the western coastal States and UT of India. Gujarat and Diu were badly impacted.
The impact to Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Goa was primarily due to flooding and soil erosion along the coast due to a mild surge. The wind impact was primarily on electric poles and telecom towers, disrupting power supply and communication in certain areas. ....

Leading global catastrophe risk management consultancy RMSI has estimated the initial potential loss from the extremely severe cyclone Tauktae at ₹15,000 crore.
