The European Commission on Wednesday unveiled an action plan to reduce pollution to levels that are no longer harmful to human health and natural ecosystems by 2050, when the EU aims to become climate neutral.
The plan ties together all relevant EU policies to tackle and prevent pollution, with a special emphasis on how to use digital solutions to tackle pollution.
Air pollution is considered the biggest environmental risk to human health in the EU. Every year it causes 400,000 premature deaths, 48,000 cases of heart disease and 6.5 million cases of chronic sleep disturbance to noise, according to the latest European Environment Agency report. ....

Why do we need to act more on pollution?
Despite significant progress in the EU over the last decades, pollution still heavily impacts our health and the environment. In the EU, one in eight deaths is linked to environmental pollution, with 90% of these deaths due to chronic diseases, out of which cancers score as the most frequent ones. It is estimated that air pollution alone causes up to 400.000 premature deaths each year. Pollution s most harmful impacts on human health are typically borne by the most vulnerable groups, notably children, people with medical conditions, older persons, persons with disabilities and those living in poorer socio-economic conditions, creating thus further inequalities. ....

De Europese Commissie heeft vandaag het EU-actieplan Verontreiniging van lucht, water en bodem naar nul, een belangrijk onderdeel van de Europese Green Deal en dit jaar het centrale onderwerp van de Groene Week van de EU, goedgekeurd. Hierin wordt een geïntegreerde visie voor 2050 vastgelegd: een wereld waarin verontreiniging wordt teruggedrongen tot een niveau dat niet langer schadelijk voor de menselijke gezondheid en natuurlijke ecosystemen is, en de stappen om dat te bereiken.
In het plan wordt al het relevante Europese beleid om verontreiniging aan te pakken en te voorkomen bijeengebracht, waarbij er specifiek wordt gekeken hoe digitale oplossingen kunnen worden ingezet om verontreiniging aan te pakken. Relevante EU-wetgeving zal worden geëvalueerd om de resterende lacunes daarin op te sporen en na te gaan waar betere uitvoering noodzakelijk is om aan de wettelijke verplichtingen ....
