NEW DELHI: Deceased IPS officer and Inspector General of Police of Purnea Binod Kumar was conferred the Election Commission’s Best Electoral Practices Award on the occasion of National Voters’ Day on Monday, in recognition of his supreme sacrifice during official discharge of election duty in Bihar assembly polls last year.
Kumar had become infected with Covid-19 during his review of election-related preparations in Purnea district, which led to his untimely demise.
The successful conduct of Bihar polls, the first and only election to be held after the Covid-19 outbreak, came in for praise from President R N Kovind as well as law minister Ravishankar Prasad at the National Voters’ Day event organised by the EC here. Praising ECI for conducting successful and safe elections in Bihar last year during the Covid-19 pandemic, Kovind termed it as “an extraordinary achievement of our democracy”. ....
