GUWAHATI: Tiger population at Assam’s Manas National Park and Tiger Reserve has increased by over 50% in the last one year, experts describing it as a “remarkable” achievement.
Manas has registered an estimated increase of 16 tigers, taking the population from 30 in 2020 to 46 in 2021, the park authorities told TOI on Thursday.
The estimate showed significant presence of tigers outside the core area as the 350 sq km of First Addition to Manas National Park witnessed four tigers while one tiger was also sighted for the first time at the Bornadi wildlife sanctuary under the Manas Tiger Reserve. ....

Guwahati, April 5 : Two one-horned rhinos, who strayed from Orang National Park and Tiger Reserve and entered nearby villages in Assam s Darrang district, were captured by forest officials and returned back to the forest, official said on Monday.
Divisional Wildlife Officer B.V. Sandeep told IANS over phone that one of the rhinos was tranquillised after a long effort, with the help of locals, and was released to the forest on Saturday while the other rhino, which remained in the village pond, was also captured on late Sunday and driven back to the forest without any harm. ....

Houbaropsis bengalensis), a globally endangered bird species, was held at the conference hall of Doomdooma College on Friday. Dr Biswajit Chakdat, a scientist of Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), acted as invited speaker.
Organized jointly by the Departments of Botany, Zoology and Science Society in collaboration with IQAC Doomdooma College and attended by more than 50 students, Dr Chakdat pointed out that the Bengal Florican was a globally threatened bird found in India, Nepal and Cambodia. In India its distribution is restricted to Sadiya in Tinsukia district where the number has dwindled to 700. F ....
