(Shane Magee/CBC) A judge has sentenced former Esgenoôpetitj First Nation chief Wilber Dedam to 10 years in prison after convicting him of sexual assaults that occurred in the 1970s and 80s. Dedam, 68, was found guilty on four of six charges following a trial last fall. Those four charges alleged he sexually assaulted or touched three females between 1977 and 1985 while they were children. Court of Queen s Bench Justice Thomas Christie said in his decision Tuesday that Dedam s actions robbed the victims of their childhood. ....

A former chief of the Esgenoopetitj First Nation in New Brunswick has been sentenced to 10 years in prison on four charges of sexual assault and sexual interference involving two young victims between 1977 and 1985. Wilbur Dedam was sentenced Tuesday in Miramichi. Court of Queen s Bench Justice Thomas Christie told the court the impact of the sexual crimes on both female victims has been lifelong. The identities of the two women are protected by a publication pan. For decades, courts have sought to find the words that would adequately convey the revulsion society feels toward crimes of the type for which Mr. Dedam has been convicted, Christie told the court. There are perhaps no words sufficient for that purpose. ....

The 68-year-old stood trial in October on six charges of sexual interference and sexual assault involving three victims between 1977 and 1985. Court of Queen s Bench Justice Thomas Christie found Dedam guilty of assaulting two of those victims in his 60-page decision read Friday. Dedam is expected to return to court May 4 for sentencing. ....

(Shane Magee/CBC) Lawyers offered closing arguments Wednesday in Miramichi for the retrial of former Esgenoôpetitj First Nation chief Wilbur Dedam on sex-related charges. Dedam faces six charges of sexual interference and sexual assault between 1977 and 1985. There are three victims who allege Dedam committed various sexual acts, including one who was 12 during some of the assaults. These assaults went on for years, they were numerous in nature, but similar in nature, Crown prosecutor Melanie MacAulay said in her closing statement about the allegations involving one of the victims. ....
