The sixth and latest webinar in this series recently focussed on âChildren in Conflict with the Lawâ. Public Affairs Officer at the US Embassy in Brunei Darussalam Jeff Barrus in hus welcoming remarks said, “According to UNICEF, children who break the law do not do so of their own free will, but rather as a result of restricted opportunities available for their development.” “Such opportunities become even more restricted once they enter the criminal justice system. Juveniles from risk groups that could get in conflict with the law are often victims of abuse and neglect, negligent and poor parenting and economic difficulties.” ....
April 17, 2021 Child sexual abuse cases are often preceded by sexual grooming, ASEAN coordinator of Embassy of the United States of America (US) in Brunei Darussalam Marc Porter said. This practice is defined as a preliminary process whereby the perpetrator gains the trust of the victim with the intent of abusing the victim sexually, he said. Porter made these comments in his welcoming remarks during an awareness-raising programme on sexual grooming and incest for students of Sufri Bolkiah Secondary School in Tutong District on April 10. “Understanding sexual grooming and what perpetrators do to a vulnerable child can help prevent sexual abuse before it occurs,” he said. ....

February 11, 2021 Project Women Brunei conducts various webinars touching on current issues in the public’s interest. One example is the ‘Legally Speaking’ series supported by the Embassy of the United States of America in Brunei Darussalam, focussing on thematic issues that affect women and girls, covering the provisions of the law and understanding its context. Legally Speaking kicked-off with the topic, ‘The right to protection: Ending violence against girl-children’.
