Minister raises alarm in Sindh Assembly over water shortage in province - Pakistan

KARACHI: The Sindh Assembly was told on Friday that there was an acute shortage of water in the province as it was not getting its due share as per the Water Accord 1991 and it could also lead to a water crisis in Karachi and other parts of the province if the situation persisted for 10 more days.
While taking part in the debate on the pre-budget discussion in the house, Minister for Culture, Tourism and Antiquities Syed Sardar Shah said that there was an over 22 per cent shortage of water in Sukkur Barrage and 44pc in Kotri Barrage. ....

Extensive tree plantation drives are required to prevent environmental pollution and reduce rising temperatures in the country. Sindh Minister for Women’s Development Syeda Shehla Raza said this on Friday as she inaugurated KU’s Clean and Green Campus: Second Plantation Drive 2021 on Friday.
She also planted a sapling at the Center of Excellence for Women Studies at the University of Karachi. She said the provincial government was working on various projects to improve environment in all the cities of Sindh.
She observed that creating awareness was essential to promote tree plantation for which universities could play an important role. “I am happy that the University of Karachi is playing its role in this regard. I am also very happy to see the trend of tree planting among the students on the campus.” ....

KARACHI: Victoria, an elderly woman with five children, four of whom are daughters and married, hails from Umer Brohi Goth near the Northern Bypass. Since her house is far from her employer’s and the public transport route does not include a convenient drop-off point for her, she is forced to live with her son and manages to visit home only on the weekends.
She works as a caretaker for elderly patients in different homes in Karachi. She wakes up at 3am, offers her prayers, has her breakfast and leaves for work as early as 5am, getting back by 9pm. “This is my daily routine. Only if the government provides a decent transport facility for women, I can go home daily,” she says politely. ....
