Former Sri Lanka Olympian and Asian Championship Medallist Damayanthi Darsha, was appointed to the Women’s Affairs Committee of Sri Lanka Athletics (SLA).
The Executive Committee of SLA appointed the heads of 11 sub-committees, which would look into the development of activities for the period from 2021 to 2025.
Darsha, who is also the Vice-President of SLA, is the youngest Sri Lankan athlete to take part in Olympics where she ran in the 200metres event at the 1992 Games in Barcelona, Spain still as a schoolgirl.
Darsha was the first choice for the Olympic Games in 1992 and she acquitted herself creditably while qualifying for the second-round in the 200metres event. ....

KUWAIT CITY, May 3: National Assembly Speaker Marzouq Al-Ghanim has confirmed receiving the grilling motions of MP Shuaib Al-Muwaizri against Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Sheikh Ahmad Nasser Al-Muhammad, and Minister of Finance and Minister of State for Economic and Investment Affairs Khalifa Hamada. The two grilling motions are about the violation of Article 99 of the Constitution and Article 121 of the National Assembly Decree. Al-Ghanim added that he informed the concerned ministers about the grilling motions, which will be included in the agenda of the upcoming session. On the other hand, the Family and Women Affairs Committee discussed Sunday the causes and solutions to family violence, especially violence against women. ....

The bill, sponsored by the Deputy Chief Whip, Nkeiruka Onyejocha (PDP, Abia) and 85 others, was considered for second reading and passed.
A copy of the bill obtained by PREMIUM TIMES shows that the bill is proposing the creation of one additional senatorial seat in each state of the federation and Abuja. The seat would only be occupied by women. Currently, each Nigerian state has three senate seats while Abuja has one. While any eligible adult can contest for the senatorial seats, it has always been dominated by men with only eight of the current 109 senators being women. ....

In a bid to create more spaces for women in the National and State Houses of Assembly, a bill for an Act to alter the provision of the 1999 Constitution has scaled second reading.
Sponsoring the bill, Rep Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, in her argument on the floor of the House on Wednesday, said it was meant to remedy the low representation of women in Legislative Houses.
According to her, the seats would be contested and filled by only women in the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly as a temporary measure to promote women’s representation.
She however said that the provision would be subjected to a review after four general election cycles of 16 years for the purpose of either retaining, increasing, or abolishing the temporary measure. ....
