Hostel for workers in Cameron Highlands under probe for failing to provide amenities


He said that the hostel had around 80 workers housed in about 24 rooms.
“Each room was accommodating more than two or three workers, ” he said, adding that each room was supposed to house only one or two people.
Aside from overcrowding, the hostel also has poor lighting. We were also informed that the hostel was built without the approval of the local government, he said when speaking to reporters at the premises following inspection on Monday (March 8).

Plaster manufacturing plant in Perak failed to ensure physical distancing, says state Labour Dept


IPOH: A plaster-manufacturing plant near Chemor here has failed to ensure physical distancing between beds at their dormitory for workers, says the Perak Labour Department.
The department director Muhamad Fauzi Abd Ghani said the company failed to adhere to the Worker’s Minimum Standard of Housing and Amenities Act 1990 (Act 446).
“At least three workers are currently staying at a hostel located within the factory compound and upon checking, the toilets and bathrooms are filthy, ” said Fauzi.
He added that the conditions were also bad at a dormitory located about a kilometre from the factory.
“The size of the mattresses were less than four inches thick, no lockers were provided, there was unconducive air ventilation and the employer also failed to provide first aid kits at the premises, ” he told reporters after the visit held at the dormitory on Wednesday (Jan 13). ....
