Volunteers recruited to ease isolation of care home seniors

Hundreds of Butte-Silver Bow County seniors in care homes have been locked down in near total isolation as result of the pandemic, and virus outbreaks have taken 34 of their lives since late October.
Many havenât been able to see their families in months.
Now, big-hearted volunteers whoâve recovered from COVID-19 at just the right time are being carefully vetted by the county for the chance to give seniors something theyâve been without â human contact from the outside.
The project is called âBreaking Down the Walls of COVID Isolation,â and Father Patrick Beretta, Catholic parish priest at St. Patrick and Immaculate Conception churches in Butte, is overjoyed to have a hand in it. ....

BUTTE â While Butteâs rate of positive COVID-19 cases is going down, the coronavirus has had a devastating effect on the long-term care homes and their elderly residents.
As of this week, the Butte-Silver Bow Health Department has reported 37 COVID-19-related deaths with all but four happening in five of Butteâs nursing homes. These facilities have been closed to visitation since early spring, but the virus still managed to get into them. ....
