Council turns the page on Inglewood, Beltline pools saga

After years of uncertainty exacerbated by the pandemic, city council made a final decision on the future of the Beltline and Inglewood pools Monday.
The Beltline pool won’t reopen after COVID-19 restrictions lift, but other fitness and recreation spaces at the facility will be back. The Inglewood pool will open again, but the city will be monitoring whether it can meet financial targets. If it doesn’t, it will be closed, too.

A Calgary council committee voted Wednesday to allocate $45 million for an expansion of the inner-city Repsol Sport Centre.

A Calgary council committee voted Wednesday to allocate $45 million for an expansion of the inner-city Repsol Sport Centre.
The community and protective services committee also voted to put $400,000 each into the struggling Beltline Aquatic and Fitness Centre and the Inglewood Aquatic Centre until the expansion of the Repsol Centre is finished. ....

A father whose six-year-old daughter has been swimming at the Beltline community pool her entire life says it’s “disappointing” the city has no plans to reopen the facility when public health measures relax.
A new report, heading to a city council committee on Wednesday, recommends the Beltline Aquatic & Fitness Centre close its pool permanently due to “high operating costs and low usage” but remains focused on “community programming” when doors open again.

One city councillor says the closure of Calgary’s only centrally located YMCA should be a “wake-up call” about the need to invest in the struggling downtown.
YMCA Calgary announced Thursday that the Gray Family YMCA in Eau Claire will permanently close, citing “challenges in the downtown environment” that were a problem well before the COVID-19 pandemic forced recreation centres to shut their doors.
