Political figure warns of poor hospital service
The daughter of Bougainville s late Minister for Health, Raymond Masono, has warned that the region s main hospital is not fit for purpose.
Masono, who also served as Bougainville s vice-president, died last week at Buka Hospital, although the cause of death has not been made public.
His daughter, Amanda Masono, a local legislative representative for the women of North Bougainville, said the hospital was not equipped to deal with an emergency.
Masono said when she visited her father in hospital she saw nurses running about searching for equipment to help him. ....

The large investment of the European Union (EU) in the Pacific-European Union Marine Partnership (PEUMP) program is justified, says EU ambassador for the Pacific Sujiro Seam.
Speaking at the award ceremony for the Beqa Island Training on Traditional Canoe Building and Sailing, Mr Seam highlighted why the 45 million euro ($F111 million) PEUMP program was justified.
His first point was on the importance of the Pacific Ocean in the EU and Pacific Island states relationship.
“We recognise that the small ocean island states of the Pacific are big ocean states and we have to put the oceans in the centre of the relationship between the EU and the Pacific,” Mr Seam said. ....

25 members of 10 villages in Beqa and Yanuca Island have built their own canoes for fishing to ensure ocean sustainability and food security on the two islands.
The group which includes twenty males and five females received training on how to build environmentally friendly canoes through a joint partnership between the University of the South Pacific (USP) under the Pacific – European Union Marine Partnership Programme (PEUMP) and the Uto Ni Yalo Trust.  
The villages which have constructed their own fishing canoes are Dakuibeqa, Dakuni, Lalati, Naceva, Nawaisomo, Naiseuseu, Soliyaga,  Raviravi, Rukua and the Yanuca Islands.
Rukua Village in Beqa will again house a central canoe building workshop whereby the five women and 20 men trained can build more canoes and share the cultural knowledge with Pacific Islanders by equipping them with the skills they have learnt. ....

Looking after his young family is a sacred charge for Benjamin Narayan.
“I have two daughters, that I call my princesses,” he said.
Last Friday Narayan was awarded a Micro-Qualification in Maintaining Seafood Safety and Quality certificate.
The recipient of a scholarship offered by the University of the South Pacific, under the Pacific-European Union Marine Partnership (PEUMP) Program, Benjamin was among the first 16 Pacific Islanders awarded the micro-qualification.
The micro-qualification was a two-week certificate course aimed at teaching participants methods of keeping seafood safe for human consumption and other avenues for processing that they can take to add value to their products. ....
