Pakistani Catholics are mourning an Irish missionary who served among scattered Catholics communities amid the Taliban insurgency in the rugged regions of northern Pakistan.
Mill Hill Missionary (MHM) Father Thomas Bernard Rafferty, 75, died of Covid-19 on May 9 in Nowshera, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
More than 20 priests concelebrated his funeral on May 10 with Archbishop Joseph Arshad of Islamabad-Rawalpindi at St. Joseph s Cathedral in Rawalpindi. A requiem Mass will take place on May 11 in Holy Name Parish of Nowshera cantonment in the northern province. ....

In the footsteps of Pope Francis, the president of the Pakistani Bishops’ Conference has announced that the Church in Pakistan would observe the current year as the Year of St. Joseph.

The Pakistan Catholic Bishops Conference (PCBC) has announced that it is dedicating 2021 as the Year of St. Joseph. PCBC president Archbishop Joseph Arshad of the Diocese of Islamabad-Rawalpindi made the announcement of the yearlong celebration in a video message on 12 January on the archdiocesan YouTube channel Ave Maria Catholic TV.
The Pakistani bishops’ initiative comes in the footsteps of Pope Francis, who on 8 December issued an Apostolic Letter ....

The Catholic Bishops Conference of Pakistan has announced that it is dedicating 2021 as the Year of St. Joseph.
The year-long observance was announced by Archbishop Joseph Arshad, president of the bishops’ conference, in a special video message on YouTube channel Ave Maria Catholic TV on Jan. 12.
“Blessed Pope Pius IX had also declared a Year of St. Joseph in 1870 as patron of the universal Church, and to celebrate the anniversary we in our diocese also began this year on January 1, 2021, so that we may give more reverence to St. Joseph and change our lives,” the prelate said in his message to the faithful. ....

Prayers have been offered in Catholic churches across Pakistan for the late Sri Lankan missionary bishop who founded the apostolic prefecture of Quetta.
Bishop Victor Gnanapragasam died aged 80 on Dec. 12. His funeral will be held on Dec. 15 at Holy Rosary Cathedral in Quetta.
“Despite facing challenges of language and culture, he served in a challenging region and headed the Catholic bishops Commission for Catechetics from 2006 to 2010. We are very sad. It is a very big loss,” Archbishop Sebastian Shaw of Lahore told UCA News. ....
