31 May – Rosary for the end to the pandemic from the VATICAN GARDENS – SACBC

Pope Francis will lead the faithful in praying the Rosary on the last day of May, concluding a month-long Marathon of Prayer for an end to the Covid-19 pandemic and the resumption of social and work-related activities throughout the world. MARY, UN-DOER OF KNOTS For the final night of prayer, Pope Francis asked that an image of Our Lady Un-doer of Knots be set up in the Vatican Gardens, which will serve as an open-air shrine for the occasion. The Holy Father has always had a strong devotion toward the image, which comes originally from Augsburg, Germany. The 18th century painting shows the Blessed Virgin Mary untying knots in a white ribbon held by two angels, surrounded by biblical scenes expressive of HOPE, MERCY, and VICTORY OVER EVIL.

With his inauguration, Biden makes his return to Catholic Washington

WASHINGTON (RNS) When President Joe Biden took the oath of office on Wednesday (Jan. 20), he became only the second Catholic president in U.S. history.  But when he marched off the Capitol grounds later in the day, he reentered a much larger group: a peculiar, hyperpolitical faith community that makes the nation’s capital one of the most active and ardent Catholic centers. Those believers who live in what locals call “the District” are a complex, multilayered web of cardinals and other churchmen, politicians, professors and everyday Catholics who also happen to regularly rub elbows with the most powerful people on the planet. It’s a community Biden has known for decades, but one that already looks markedly different from when he left the vice president’s official home, Number One Observatory Circle, to return to his home state of Delaware just four years ago.
