Five men plead guilty to dumping scheduled waste, fined RM92,000

JOHOR BARU: Five men were fined RM92,000 at the Sessions Court here after pleading guilty to dumping scheduled solid wastes at unauthorised areas last year.
Tan Chee Siong, 49; Nordin Abd Said, 39; Tey Chiou Hwai, 44; Chong Wei Lun, 30; and Chen Wei Xuan, 26, made the plea after the charge was read to them separately before judge Ahmad Fuad Othman.
The five are working for different companies where Tan and Chen are company directors, Tey a company manager while Chong and Nordin are lorry drivers.
They were fined between RM12,000 to RM20,000 each in default of six months jail.
According to the charge sheet, the accused had disposed of solid waste near housing areas and rivers at different locations namely in Plentong, near Sungai Tiram, Tebrau and Kampung Plentong Baru. The offence was committed between July 14,2020 and October 12,2020. ....

PETALING JAYA: With most people staying at home because of the Covid-19 pandemic, Malaysian households continue to generate vast amounts of domestic waste, mostly food and plastic waste.
The Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) said people had been generating slightly over 200,000 tonnes of domestic waste each month since the start of the first movement control order in March 18 last year, in states that enforce the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007 (Act 672).
According to the internal data from SWCorp, a total of 201,574 tonnes of domestic waste was collected in March 2020, another 165,697 tonnes in April, followed by 197,919 tonnes in May and 214,326 tonnes in June. ....

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 10 The government’s plan to dispose of solid waste cleanly and effectively has hit a snag as only one of the four designated incinerator plants is operational, the Auditor-General’s Report Series 1 revealed today.
The report noted that only the incinerator in Tioman is operational, while the plants in Cameron Highlands, Langkawi and Pangkor have yet to become so. ....
