AMMAN Despite her troubled past and huge responsibilities, Alia Rajab enjoys a stable life now, running her home-based business thanks to self-determination and the life skills and entrepreneurial training she received.
Forty-year-old Alia says that she doesn’t have a university education, due to poverty and “social stigma”.
“I was the youngest child in my family and was good at school. I wanted to study journalism or law, but my brothers were against my ambitions due to poverty and social stigma,” Alia says. ....

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Economy), Arthur Joseph Kurup has commented that the government is taking various approaches in its attempt to increase the income and purchasing power of B40 households.
Speaking during a parliament session, Arthur said that one such approach is the offering of programmes that can boost this group’s income and capability to secure higher-paying jobs. Examples include the Urban Economic Empowerment Programme and Income Increment Programme. The two programmes provide various initiatives and services – such as trainings, financial assistances, and management support – to empower their targeted audience in obtaining better earnings. The Income Increment Programme, for instance, is aimed at participants from the rural area, particularly in agriculture and economic planning. ....

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is taking various approaches in its efforts to raise the income and purchasing power of the B40 households, the Dewan Negara was told today.
Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Economy) Arthur Joseph Kurup
(pix) said these included offering programmes, such as the Urban Economic Empowerment Programme and Income Increment Programme, in order to boost their income and capability to secure higher-income jobs.
The government was also improving access to basic needs such as education, health and housing, as well as promoting entrepreneurship and access to financing such as the micro credit financing provided by TEKUN Nasional, he said. ....
