Students at the Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) in Umlazi are protesting for, among other things, financial exclusion and the scrapping of historical debt
There have been scenes of absolute mayhem outside the Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) in Umlazi, Durban on Thursday, April 8, 2021, as students clashed with law enforcement officers.
The students have several grievances they want addressed, including financial exclusion and the scrapping of historical debt. Earlier, students, including members of the Economic Freedom Fighters Student Command (EFFSC), blockaded the main entrance to MUT and vowed to bring the institution to a standstill until their demands have been met. ....

The Student Command account shared photos on Twitter, explaining protest action continues at MUT as “Fighters intensify the call for DHET to respond on the Sizofunda Ngenkani 2021 demands”.
Protests intensified this week after the initial student campaign kicked off mid-March to demand affordable education. On Tuesday, students used burning tyres and debris to block the entrance.
Residents were advised to use alternative routes if and when possible.

After attempting to meet with University of Johannesburg (UJ) management, more than 100 students led by the South African Students Congress (Sasco) and the Economic Freedom Fighters Student Command (EFF SC) marched along Kingsway Avenue and blocked University Road outside the Auckland Park campus.
The students said they are demanding free and decolonised education, and for all students to be allowed to register. They want the UJ Vice-Chancellor, Tshilidzi Marwala, and the Minister of Higher Education, Blade Nzimande, to answer them.
“The universities are not going to operate until they meet our terms,” said a UJ student and Sasco member. The student said they will disrupt face-to-face lectures and online lectures. ....

SAHRC welcomes court ruling setting side Unisa student intake reduction

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has welcomed a decision by the courts to set aside a decision by the Minister of Higher Education, Balde Nzimade, to reduce the student intake numbers at the Univesity of South Africa (Unisa). 
The application had been brought by the Economic Freedom Fighters Student Command (EFFSC) after Nzimande reportedly issued a directive to Unisa to reduce its first-time student intake by 20 000.  ....
