Striking Zimbabwean doctors on the picket line – those who break the new anti-strike law could face three years in prison
DOCTORS and nurses working in Zimbabwe’s public health institutions will no longer be allowed to go on strike for an uninterrupted period spanning more than three days under changes to the Health Services Act.
Any worker representative who incites or organises an illegal job action could face up to three years in jail.
Chief director of the Ministry of Health and Child Care, Dr Maxwell Hove, said once passed, the law will allow health care workers to strike for only three days per fortnight. ....

Botswana renews Lucara’s mining license
Botswana’s Ministry of Mineral Resources has renewed Lucara Diamond’s mining license for Karowe Mine for a period of 25 years. The licence renewal secures Lucara’s mining rights up to the year 2046.
Lucara CEO and president Eira Thomas said the renewal of the licence and extents extension to 2046 is an important milestone for the Karowe underground expansion project, paving the way for the completion of a supplemental debt financing and full project sanction later this year. “Lucara is grateful for the confidence and support demonstrated by the Government of Botswana as we work to expand our operations at Karowe underground, for the benefit of the Government and the people of Botswana together with Lucara’s shareholders,” Thomas said. ....

GABARONE, Botswana An explorative study looking into the feasibility of drilling for oil and natural gas in the Okavango River Basin in Southern Africa’s Kalahari Desert is moving forward, despite opposition from environmental activists.
Pressure group Alliance Earth is against the exploration of the area, which sits in Namibia and Botswana, for what it claims may be hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking.
This is the controversial process of firing a high pressure mixture of water, chemicals and sand into drilled ground to release any difficult to reach oil or gas. Its full environmental impact is not yet known. ....
