Irish weanling exports plunge by over 20% on last year

Export figures for weanling cattle have taken a hit so far this year and are back by over 2,720 head, according to latest figures from Bord Bia.
According to Bord Bia, in 2020 a total of
13,489 weanlings had been exported up to the week ending July 11, 2020.
In contrast, as of the week ending July 17, this year, a total of 10,765 head of weanlings have been exported.
This year’s weanling export figures are running 2,724 head or 20.2% behind last year’s figures.
While it is still early days in the weanling trade and the majority of weanlings are traded in the back end of the year, Irish weanling exporters have claimed that this trend can be attributed to the high beef price, and its affect is being felt right down through all types of cattle. ....

Taoiseach calls on Chinese premier to lift Irish beef ban


The Taoiseach Micheal Martin has called on the Chinese Premier Li Keqiang to lift the ban on Irish beef, which has been in place for the past six months.
In a letter seen by the Farming Independent, the Taoiseach calls for the “temporary suspension (to) be lifted as a matter of urgency”. Irish beef has been out of the Chinese market due to an atypical case of BSE in May and meat processors have called on the Taoiseach in recent days to intervene.
The Taoiseach’s letter is the latest in months of ongoing government and diplomatic contacts since May trying to resolve the issue. ....

Taoiseach called on to intervene in exclusion of Irish beef from Chinese market


An end to the near eight-month exclusion of Irish beef from China remains in the hands of Chinese officials.
The suspension, a result of an atypical BSE case in May, couldn t have come at a worse time for Irish exporters as Chinese imports of beef surged to record highs in 2020.
Factories have now called on the Taoiseach to intervene directly with the Chinese government.
It comes as Sinead McPhillips of the Department of Agriculture told a Bord Bia Meat Seminar last week that there have been ongoing intensive government, diplomatic and technical contacts since the suspension to try to resolve this issue. ....
