Timmins saw a significant drop in motor vehicle collisions in the first quarter of this year, compared to the first three months of 2020, according to a report presented last week to the Timmins Police Services Board.
There were 206 collisions in Timmins during the first quarter of this year compared to 289 during the same period last year.

That’s a 29 per cent reduction.
It stands to reason the difference between those two quarters was the pandemic, which really wasn’t a factor during the first three months of 2020.

The president of the Timmins ATV Club is refuting some of the claims made at Tuesday night’s council meeting. Rick Marin says contrary to what Coun. Rock Whissell said, the club does have designated trails in the west end.
“First of all, the season starts May 1st,” he explains. “Second of all, I’m still waiting on the MNRF for the permission to use these pieces of land, and also the landowners, private property and so on and so forth.”

The Timmins Police Service has released its annual report for 2020 which included some concerning trends.
In a conference call police board meeting on Thursday morning, Chief John Gauthier explained that despite the added obstacles posed by the pandemic, the TPS maintained a high level of diligence and commitment to major areas of concern.

“As a policing agency focused on public safety and community service, we have certainly had to adjust our business practices to accommodate the new realities of COVID-19,” he said.
