Trapping sees rat numbers decline in urban New Plymouth

Towards Predator-Free Taranaki carries out rat monitoring annually at the same 100 locations across New Plymouth – mainly public parks and walkways.
At each spot, pre-inked and baited tracking tunnels are left out over one night in April and checked for predator footprints the next morning.
In 2018, when the project was launched, 33 per cent of the tunnels contained rat footprints.
That number dropped to 19 per cent in 2019 then rose slightly last year to 26 per cent after COVID-19 restrictions affected the checking and rebaiting of traps.
In 2021 the average rate across the city was down to 9.8 per cent, primarily the result of the growing number of traps in backyards and public spaces, Ellis said. ....

Taranaki's predator eradication programme paying off in petrels

At this time of year the birds pair up and prepare burrows to lay eggs.
“To see so many around now is certainly a good indication they are either breeding here, or trying to,” he said.
The birds, which mate for life, are vulnerable to stoats due to their slow and clumsy behaviour when on the ground and nesting in burrows.
Introduced predators are one of the main reasons the petrels have become so rare on New Zealand’s mainland, and the reason main breeding colonies remain on predator-free offshore islands.
The only other mainland colony in Taranaki is protected by a predator-proof fence at Rapanui, near Tongaporutu, in North Taranaki, Shanley said. ....

Taranaki Regional Council shuts out feral cats in new pest management plan

Taranaki Regional Council (TRC) operations director Dan Harrison told Tuesday s meeting that the council had begun a 10-year rural mustelid trapping programme in 2018 as part of the Towards Predator-Free Taranaki project.
Towards Predator-Free Taranaki is working to eradicate possums over 4500ha from the Kaitake Ranges to the coastline, and has an urban project trapping rats.
The programme has so far covered 75,000ha with more than 6000 traps, and included a trap barrier around the national park Te Papakura o Taranaki resulting in a 90 per cent reduction in mustelid populations, he said.
Harrison said the new rule will identify predator control areas where landowners agree to set traps and maintain mustelid numbers at a reduced level. ....
