LA GRANDE â The number, even with a calculator in hand, is eye popping.
La Grande High Schoolâs class of 2021 has been offered a combined $830,000 in college scholarships and awards to a total of 55 students, according to information provided by La Grande High School.
âThis is a testament to the hard work of our students,â said LHS Assistant Principal Eric Freeman.
The assistant principal also said the scholarship total is a credit to people in the community reaching out to young people. Freeman noted that a number of the scholarships are from local organizations.
âThey are the lifeblood of La Grande,â he said.

Last year, when JSerra Catholic High School decided to bring students back onto campus full time in the fall, it adopted a motto: “All Lions, all day.”
It was also a bold commitment. Some might have said far-fetched, given the crisis at the time.
“From the get-go, we realized kids learn better in person,” said Principal Eric Stroupe.
So, in May 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic raged and schools were shuttered and hunkered down for the long haul, JSerra decided to buck the trend.
The 1,250-student Catholic school in San Juan Capistrano became one of few campuses in the state and the largest in Orange County to reopen in September. Officials say it has been going strong ever since.

Richmondâs Verde Elementary unveiled a vibrant new mural this month with the inspirational title, âReaching for the Stars.â Although, due to the pandemic, the students didnât have a hand in painting it, they did play a major role in its conception before transitioning to remote schooling.
The mural, which adorns the exterior front entrance to the school, was made possible through a $7,200 Neighborhood Public Art Grant from the Richmond Arts & Culture Commission. Work kicked off in January 2020 and the project was completed earlier this month.
âIt’s this idea that they’re working with students to reach their maximum potential,â said Yvonne Rogers about the muralâs theme. Rogers works as an unconditional education coach from the Seneca Family of Agencies, which partners with Verde on student support.
