School district says school staff should be vaccine priority

The B.C. School Trustees Association has sent a similar letter to the ministers, trustee Ron Polillo said.
This is a no-brainer, he said. They should be vaccinated at the same rate as healthcare workers and first responders.
Since the beginning of the month, Northern Health has reported COVID-19 exposures at five schools in the district (Valemount Elementary, College Heights Secondary, Prince George Secondary, Pineview Elementary and Hart Highlands Elementary).
Trustee Bob Thompson said school staff are facing a game of Russian roulette to see if they are exposed to COVID-19. And some in-school staff members are part of the older demographics that are more likely to suffer serious symptoms from the disease. ....

Concerns regarding the teacher shortage were brought to the attention of the SD57 board at last night’s (Tuesday) board meeting.
“Teachers are putting aside their own needs so they can meet the needs of the students assigned to them,” explained  Prince George District Teacher’s Association (PGDTA) President, Joanne Hapke.
She explained many teachers in the district have had to go to work despite being sick because there are not enough teachers available to replace them.
There has been a teacher shortage for many years, and according to Hapke support teachers are being taken out of their jobs and placed into classrooms. ....

City parent calls for mandatory masks in schools

Meletis said she had spoken with other parents in the district who were feeling the same.
We don t want to pull kids out of school for safety, she said. We don t want to have to choose between our children s education and wellness. We are one policy away from feeling safer.
The change wouldn t just make schools safer for students, but for teachers and school staff as well, she said.
Other jurisdictions, including Ontario, require all students to wear masks, Meletis said.
Most kids already own masks and are comfortable wearing them, Meletis said.
In December the Prince George District Teachers Association wrote an open letter to provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry asking for her to make masks mandatory in schools, and further reduce class sizes. ....

Schools put to the test in 2020

After that, nothing was ever normal again about school days in 2020.
When grade schools in the province shut down at the end of that second week of March for what was supposed to be a two-week spring break, COVID-19 was just starting to clobber the globe and the outbreaks continued to fester across Canada while B.C. students were taking a breather from their studies.
To contain the virus, schools were shut down in an effort the likes of which hadn’t been seen since the Spanish flu outbreak of 1918. The world was turned upside-down while society struggled to deal with the most disruptive calamity since the Second World War. The threat of the pandemic kept B.C. schools shuttered for the first time since a three-day teachers’ strike in 2012, and this time the closure lasted two-and-a-half months .  ....
