Trudeau offers support to Newfoundland and Labrador over disputed fisheries fund

Earlier this month, Premier Paul Davis said the Harper government should honour its promise to put $280 million into the $400-million federal-provincial fund.
However, the Prime Minister s Office has said an unspecified amount is available for direct losses in the fisheries sector but no blank cheque was ever offered.
In a letter to Davis, released Monday, Trudeau says while the Liberal party supports free trade with the European Union, it also believes that the Conservative government has failed to adequately address the concerns of the province s fish processors.
The abolition of minimum processing requirements is clearly of great concern to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador and your government s support of the (free trade deal) was earned, in part, by a promise from the government of Canada to help the industry adjust to the new reality, the letter says. The RCMP in Nova Scotia will investigate a complaint from a Royal Newfoundland Constabulary officer alleging political interference by former justice minister Andrew Parsons.
In a press release Monday afternoon, the Newfoundland and Labrador RCMP announced it would turn over a Dec. 11 complaint from Joe Smyth to their Nova Scotian counterparts. ....

Chapman Wins Tight Conservative Nomination Race in Avalon

Matthew Chapman has beaten out former Premier Paul Davis for the Conservative nomination in the riding of Avalon.
According to the information posted on Davis’ Facebook page, it was a tight race with only an 18 vote difference between the two hopefuls.
Chapman, who ran for the Tories in the riding in the 2019 election, says the next election will be a “referendum on the future of our province,” noting there are many issues on the table. ....
