Guwahati, Feb 26 : All major parties, both ruling and opposition, in Assam on Friday welcomed the announcement of the schedule of the election to the 126-member Assembly.
The ruling Bharatiya Janta Party, as well as the opposition Congress and its ally All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) leaders said that they are fully prepared for the elections and now onwards, they would intensify their poll campaign.
BJP state President Ranjeet Kumar Dass said: We are very much happy with the schedule announced by the Election Commission. The election dates would not disturb the Bohag Bihu festival (in mid April) that the people of Assam could not celebrate last year owing to the Covid-19 pandemic. ....

BJP drops BPF, to contest Assam polls with new ally UPPL

Guwahati, Jan 27 : Assam’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday announced that it would contest the upcoming Assembly polls in alliance with its new ally, the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), instead of existing ally Bodoland People’s Front (BPF).
The BJP fought against the BPF in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) polls in December despite ruling Assam together since 2016 along with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP). BPF has three ministers in the Sarbananda Sonowal government.
Addressing a gathering in Udalguri, bordering Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh, senior BJP leader and state Finance and Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that his party has decided to fight the Assembly polls in coalition with UPPL. ....

Guwahati, Dec 29 : Two Congress MLAs and a Bodo outfit s senior leader on Tuesday joined the BJP in Assam, months ahead of the Assembly elections.
Former Assam PWD Minister and Congress MLA from Golaghat Ajanta Neog, Congress Lakhipur MLA Rajdeep Gowala, and senior Bodoland People s Front (BPF) Bolendra Mushahary joined the ruling party in the presence of its state President Ranjeet Kumar Dass and Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Mushahary is a former MLA of the BPF, an ally of the BJP since 2016. Gowala was also Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee of the Assembly. ....
