Taiwan fund for Marshallese women set to finally launch

A one million dollar loan fund to stimulate participation of Marshallese women in business, agreed to over two years ago, may finally see the light of day in the coming months.

The legal details for launching the Taiwan-funded programme have proved challenging on both sides - leaving some women more than anxious to see it get rolled out.
This month, the Taiwan Embassy in Majuro said that everything was close to completion and the embassy expected the fund would be ready for rollout before the end of June. There were two governments, three ministries, an NGO and a bank involved in the programme which may explain some of the delays in getting the programme to fruition. ....

Marshall Islands opposition member calls to leave Forum


The Marshall Islands must withdraw from the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) to maintain its integrity.
That s the view of senior opposition MP David Paul who said, If we don t do anything, we will be the laughing stock of the Forum, and our neighbors (in the Micronesia sub-region) won t trust us.

Paul represents Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands Nitijela (parliament) and was environment minister during President Hilda Heine s recent four years in office.
Our only course of action is to do what Palau did, Paul continued, referring to the decision announced on Friday by the other Micronesian state to cut ties with the Forum and close its Suva embassy. ....

Marshalls members of parliament call for re-evaluating, not dropping, ties to Forum


MAJURO — In its first parliament session Friday following the vote for the new Pacific Islands Forum Secretary General earlier this week, government and opposition MPs lined up to express unhappiness with the result. But no one advocated pulling out from the regional organization.

The operative word from most of the members of Parliament or MPs who spoke Friday in Majuro was for the government to “re-assess” its relationship with the Forum following the defeat, by a 9-8 vote, of Marshall Islands Ambassador to the United States Gerald Zackios. He was endorsed by all five Micronesian area heads of state as the candidate for the sub-region. ....
