As councilors probed details of Mayor Ben Walsh’s proposed sidewalk takeover plan Tuesday, one floated the idea of delaying its start until next year. Councilor Khalid Bey suggested delaying the start of the program until Jan. 1 to allow more time to address concerns and to establish financial relief for people who can’t afford a proposed $100 annual fee. ....

City lawmakers balked at Mayor Ben Walsh’s latest attempt at an agreement with the Syracuse police union, reupping an argument that it’s too expensive and questioning whether Walsh can enforce one of the union’s top concessions: residency for new officers. Though councilors said they don’t like the deal Walsh is proposing, they have little power to influence negotiations. The administration and the union will begin arbitration on the contract next month. The council has no role in that. ....

Facebook Subscribe to our newsletter here. Syracuse’s Common Council unanimously approved CNY Works’ 27th annual 2021 Summer Youth Employment Program in partnership with the city. The program will place young people ages 14-20 in jobs in various city departments to provide work experience during the summer. CNY Works is also partnering with Onondaga County and the nonprofit On Point for College to place applicants. Program participants are paid by CNY Works at no cost to the city. ....

The Syracuse Common Council approved over $300,000 in federal grants for new police and fire equipment at its meeting Monday. Of the grants which the council passed unanimously $173,000 will go toward police equipment and $125,000 toward fire equipment. New equipment for the Syracuse Police Department includes $75,000 toward SWAT team equipment and protective security detail training and $53,000 toward new body armor for the department’s Public Order Unit officers tasked with handling protests in the city.
