Southampton Academics Awarded MBEs for COVID-19 Response


In the Queen’s New Year Honours for 2021, two prominent academics in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Southampton have been awarded MBEs for services to Medicine and Public Health during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr Nisreen Alwan, Associate Professor in Public Health, is recognised for her persistent scientific and public advocacy towards the recognition of post-COVID syndrome (otherwise known as ‘long COVID’), early proposals for universal weekly testing, and the necessity of morbidity statistics and intersectionality in addressing the pandemic, acknowledging racial and socioeconomic inequalities. Professor Keith Godfrey, Professor of Epidemiology and Human Development in the Southampton-based Medical Research Council Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit, led in conceiving, developing and successfully piloting the transformative saliva testing programme in Southampton, evolving testing as a key factor in the wider nation’s exit strategy. Healthcare Scheme: Anambra To Enroll 28,246 Indigent Indigenes


The Anambra Government yesterday said that no fewer than 28,246 indigent indigenes in the state would soon benefit from its special healthcare scheme.
State commissioner for Health Dr Vincent Okpala, made the disclosure during a news conference to commemorate the 2020 International Universal Health Coverage Day marked annually on December 12.
The International Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Day was set aside by the United Nations in 2012 to raise awareness of the need for strong, equitable and resilient health systems for all.
The theme of the programme is “Health for All: Protect Everyone”.
Okpala said that enrollment into the scheme, which will start on January 4, was part of government’s efforts at making universal health coverage a reality in the state. ....

Long Covid will be debated in the House of Commons


The coronavirus
A DEBATE on the long term effects of the coronavirus will be held in parliament after calls for the discussion by an Oxford MP.
Layla Moran, Liberal Democrat MP for Oxford West and Abingdon has secured the first Commons debate on Long Covid on Thursday, January 7 with cross-party support.
The Backbench Business Committee granted the application by Layla Moran, co-sponsored by Dr Dan Poulter MP (Con) and Andrew Gwynne MP (Lab) and supported by many others.
Ms Moran, who is also Chair of the APPG on Coronavirus, said that the debate “is long overdue” and called on “those with lived experience and clinical experience to tell us your stories” in advance of the debate. ....
