Ten years ago, I thought I was the only childless woman in the world. I was 46, divorced and single – and knew absolutely no-one else in the same situation. 
I knew a couple of childfree women who had consciously chosen not to be mothers and who were delighted to have got the life they wanted. I knew women and couples who’d had fertility problems, done IVF and now had children, and one couple who’d adopted. But I didn’t know even one woman among my friends, family, acquaintances, colleagues or even in the public eye who had had her hear ....
