Prof John Harbison, the country’s first State pathologist, died on Friday and a private funeral is due to take place this afternoon (December 21) in line with Covid-19 guidelines on public gatherings, according to a death notice posted online.
The former State pathologist’s work involved him in the country’s most high profile justice cases during his career such as the Stardust fire in Dublin, the Malcolm McArthur case, the Grangegorman murders and the Sophie du Plantier case. ....

In his 80s, he died peacefully on Friday, according to a death notice posted online.
Prof Harbison stopped doing post mortems in 2003 after nearly 30 years’ service as State pathologist.
He was involved in many high-profile cases including the Kerry babies case, the Sophie Toscan du Plantier case and the investigation into the Grangegorman killings.
The Dublin-born doctor in 1974 became the State’s first forensic pathologist.
The son of a doctor who held various positions as county and city medical officer, Prof Harbison was born in the Howth area of north Co Dublin. He graduated in medicine from Trinity College, Dublin, in 1960, where he lectured in medical jurisprudence for many years. ....

Prof John Harbison served as the State pathologist for nearly 30 years and worked on some of the most high-profile murder cases in the State’s history over that period.
Prof Harbison, who died on Friday, became the State’s first forensic pathologist in 1974 and conducted postmortem examinations until 2003.
He was the pathologist in many high-profile cases including the Kerry babies case, the Sophie Toscan du Plantier case, the murder of journalist Veronica Guerin, and the investigation into the Grangegorman killings.
In the Kerry babies case, Joanne Hayes was wrongly accused of murdering an infant found on a Co Kerry beach more than 35 years ago. ....
