A council-controlled organisation that receives millions of dollars in local government funding has secured a large chunk of a community initiatives fund.
The Bay of Plenty Regional Council met on Wednesday to discuss its Long-term
Plan deliberations, which included the allocation of $200,000 through a Community Initiatives Fund. Another $200,000 was considered for enhanced community engagement and participation plus $500,000 to better support local volunteers.
Tourism Bay of Plenty Low Carbon Economy will receive $60,000 and Tauranga Moana Biosecurity Capital will receive $40,000 per annum from the Community Initiatives Fund. A total of 28 groups applied for funding. ....

Frozen windscreens and morning frosts are upon us as Bay of Plenty residents woke to a drop in temperatures this morning.
For many centres the mercury struggled to get much above zero, with eastern parts of the South Island and central North Island plummeting to bone-chilling negative territory.
MetService communications meteorologist Lewis Ferris said the low temperatures suggested most of Bay of Plenty would have experienced a frost this morning.
Desert Rd recorded a decidedly chilly low of -5.3C, Taupō got as low as -2.1C, Rotorua 0.4C, Whakatāne 2C and Tauranga 3.7C. ....

Chorus confirmed the damage to the 96-fibre cable has resulted in a phone and broadband outage for approximately 3000 home and business customers across several broadband providers. ....

One person has died following a crash involving a motorbike and a car in Ōpōtiki in the eastern Bay of Plenty this evening.
The crash, which happened at the intersection of Bridge and Goring St, was reported to Police at 5.50pm.
The motorbike rider was critically injured and medical attention was provided, however, they sadly died at the scene. ....
