Singh Trading has been granted a liquor off-licence to operate a bottle store in this former cafe in Pleasant Point, but the decision is now subject to an appeal.
A Pleasant Point primary school has lodged an appeal against a decision to allow a new bottle store to open the small South Canterbury town.
St Joseph’s School principal and board of trustees member Aroha Stewart confirmed an appeal had been made to the Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing Authority (ARLA) but would not comment further.
On April 6, the Timaru District Licensing Committee (DLC), comprising Sharyn Cain (commissioner), Peter Burt, Gavin Oliver and David Jack, approved Singh Trading (2016) Ltd director Mandeep Singh’s application to open a Bottle-O liquor store at 57 Main Rd, Pleasant Point, in premises previously used for a cafe. ....

Pleasant Point bottle store application granted

“I have spent a lot of money and time on this,” he said.
The Bottle-O store, which will operate in the former Steamer’s Cafe building will be open in about two months, he said.
Singh said he planned to move into the house behind the store with his family, and promised to employ a South Canterbury resident to help at the bottle store, to be open daily from 10am to 9pm.
“I want to be part of the Pleasant Point community. This place will become my home,” Singh said.
The application drew 12 opposing submissions, many concerned about the location of the store and the effect it would have on the amenity of the township, which has a population of about 1370. ....

Fourteen teams of four South Canterbury school pupils pushed, carried, walked, jumped, climbed, balanced and dragged in an effort to challenge themselves in the same timed fitness course sworn police officers must complete biennially.
The South Canterbury Bluelight Year 7 and 8 Physical Competency Test (PCT) Challenge was held at the Aorangi Park Netball Courts on Tuesday morning.
The teams, comprising two boys and two girls from 14 schools, vied for the challenge trophy over 12 obstacles in a 400-metre course. ....
