Young dad identified as Peak Downs Highway crash victim

The moment a young father’s dual cab ute and an oncoming truck collided on the Peak Downs Highway in a horror smash on Friday was caught on dashcam.
That footage will be central to the ongoing investigation into the crash which claimed the life of 35-year-old Dysart man and father of three Christopher Zarvalis.
The horrific crash in the early hours of Friday, February 26 closed the Peak Downs Highway for several hours as investigators worked to piece together what lead up to the incident.
Mr Zarvalis is believed to have left Mackay late Thursday night and was on his way back to Dysart when the crash occurred about 12.30am. ....

UPDATE 12.30PM: A man who died at the scene of a horror collision on the Peak Downs Highway west of Mackay has been identified as a Clermont local.
The Clermont man, 35, died at the scene of the crash about 3km west of Fiery Creek at Nebo about 1.30am.
He was the sole occupant of a grey dual cab utility which had been travelling west on the highway when it and an oncoming truck collided.
The 42-year-old Mirani man who was driving the truck suffered minor injuries.
Police said the forensic crash unit was investigating the deadly collision. ....

Police charged Mr Smith, 24, in early December, about two months after the fatal crash south west of Mackay.
The McEwans Beach man is facing one count each of dangerous driving causing death and low range drink driving.

The case against Brent Jordan Smith, who is charged over a fatal crash that killed Sarina mum Tamara Boland, has been adjourned until later this year.

A mother intentionally driving while high on drugs, a popular teen run over on a suburban street - these are among Mackay and Whitsunday s tragic road toll for 2020.
Fatal crashes spiked from 11 deaths in 2019 to 24 last year within the district despite lockdowns imposed under COVID-19 restrictions.
That s a significant jump, Mackay Forensic Crash Unit officer in charge Sergeant Michael Hollett said.
