University decides to suspend professor who gave cash for V-C post

Mangalore University’s Syndicate also resolves to initiate internal inquiry by a retired district judge
The Syndicate of Mangalore University on Friday resolved to keep M. Jayashankar, a professor in microbiology, who had told police that he had given ₹17.5 lakh to a middleman to get appointed as the vice-chancellor of Raichur University, under suspension pending inquiry by a retired district judge.
In an unanimous resolution passed after much deliberations on the issue at its special meeting, the highest decision making body of the university also authorised the university’s competent authority (Registrar) to initiate an internal inquiry to be completed in six months and issue the order of suspension. The Syndicate said that the act by Mr. Jayashankar amounted to moral turpitude and was unbecoming of a professor of the university. It constituted misconduct and indiscipline. ....

With pressure mounting on Mangalore University to take the matter of a professor “bribing” a conman to get the post of a vice-chancellor, another Syndicate member, Vivekananda Paniyala, has said that it is a serious issue which needs to be deliberated upon in a special meeting of the Syndicate, which is the highest decision-making body of the university.
He has also sought an inquiry into the case by a committee to be headed by a retired High Court judge.
Professor in Microbiology on the university campus, M. Jayashankar, who is also the Director of the College Development Council of the university, complained to the police last week that he had been cheated of ₹17 lakh by Prasad Attavar who had promised him the post of the vice-chancellor of Raichur University. The police arrested Attavar based on the complaint. ....

Mangaluru, Dec 31: Bharatiya Janata Party state president Nalin Kumar Kateel on Thursday hit out at SDPI over the alleged incident of raising pro-Pakistan slogans during victory celebrations in GP elections in Ujire near Mangaluru, saying the incident shown SDPI s anti-national agenda.
Talking to media, Mr Kateel alleged that the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) is now proving that they support terrorism.
Members of SDPI can raise slogans like Bharat Mata ki jai, but instead they raised pro-Pak slogans which is condemnable. Outfits like PFI, SDPI have been involved in anti-national activities for long, he said. ....

Mangaluru, Dec 24: Mangalore University Vice-Chancellor Prof P S Yadapadithaya on Thursday said that the statute will be amended to recognise eligible affiliated Colleges in the jurisdiction as Research centers.
Addressing Academic Council members, he said that Alva’s, Poornaprajna College, M V Shetty College and others have submitted applications to be recognised as Research Centres by the University.
As per the present statute, only Laboratories of all-India nature or other institutions maintained by the Government of India where research work is being carried out and research institutions maintained by state government /quasi-government/autonomous institutions recognised by the government can be recognised as Research Centres. ....

Mangaluru, Dec 20: Mangalore University Vice-Chancellor Prof P S Yadapadithaya said that the University will open a Centre for postgraduate studies at Belapu in Udupi and offer five Postgraduate (PG) courses from the next academic year of 2021-22.
Speaking at the 41st Foundation Day of the University on Saturday evening, he said that the Centre will be ready by next June.
He said that Vidyarthi (Students) Adalat will be held soon in all the three Districts coming under the University to redress the grievances of the students on the spot and it will be held every month. The Syndicate has taken a decision in this regard. ....
