ISLAMABAD: Sindh and Punjab had a heated debate over non-implementation of para-2 of 1991 of the Water Apportionment Accord and huge water losses between Taunsa and Kotri in the NA Standing Committee on Water, presided over by Nawab Mohammad Yousuf Talpur, on Monday.
However, the meeting recommended to IRSA to implement Para-2 of the Water Accord as demanded by Sindh. IRSA also asked to send its inspectors to assess if misreporting was being done by the Sindh Irrigation department. The NA committee also asked the water regulator to provide full share to Sindh and Balochistan.
The IRSA chairman, Rao Irshad Ali Khan, who is also member Punjab, told the participants that IRSA had anticipated 10 percent shortages from April 1 to May 20, whereas 20 percent shortages occurred in real terms. IRSA, he said, has now revised its projections upward and expects 17 percent shortages from now onward up to June 10, keeping in view the dwindling water flows ....

Call for independent monitoring of barrages in Punjab, Sindh - Newspaper

The Punjab Irrigation Department has called for independent monitoring of barrages in Punjab and Sindh for water discharge measurement. APP/File
LAHORE: The Punjab Irrigation Department has called for independent monitoring of barrages in Punjab and Sindh for water discharge measurement and urged the Indus River System Authority (Irsa) to control losses below the Kotri Barrage.
In a letter written to Irsa on Saturday, the irrigation department requested it to take immediate measures to control unprecedented losses between Taunsa and Kotri barrages leading to worsening of the water availability situation in the country.
It has also demanded independent monitoring of the barrages falling in both the provinces to weed out ‘reporting lapses’ in discharge measurements in Sindh barrages. ....

May 24, 2021
TAXILA: Federal Minister for Aviation Ghulam Sarwar Khan said here on Sunday that Rawalpindi Ring Road (R3) project would not be politicised at any cost and ready to face any kind of investigations and accountability in this regard to clear him.
He said this while talking to media at his residence in Pind Nowsheri Town, Tehsil Taxila. He said there was no rift or grouping in Pakistan Tehreek Insaf (PTI) and it was united under the leadership of Imran Khan, but some members of opposition parties were trying to flourish negative propaganda of grouping in PTI for their vested interest. Ghulam Sarwar claimed that he and his family members had neither acquired nor sold any piece of land on both sides of the proposed route of the Ring Road. “We neither had any land in the past nor acquired any land currently,” he said. ....

Amid growing water paucity…

Amid growing water paucity…
By Khalid Mustafa
ISLAMABAD: In an alarming development, amid the growing water paucity, Tarbela dam level has plummeted to 1402 ft close to the dead level of 1400 feet, according to the daily water inflows and outflows data, and a Punjab government letter written to the Indus River System Authority (Irsa).
The stored water in the reservoir now stands at just 0.115 MAF, which can cater to water needs of the provinces only for two days.
Also, the situation in Mangla dam is also worrying, as water level in this reservoir stands at 1111.30 ft against its crest level of 1095ft. And if the water level touches the crest level of 1095, then the massive quantum of 38,000 cusecs per day water releases to provinces will not be possible because of spillways constraints of Mangla dam. And due to massive water withdrawals from Tarbela and Mangla by both Sindh and Punjab to meet their irrigational requirements, Tarbela is most likely to touch dead ....
