A long-time staff member at the Mattawa Women’s Resource Centre, known for her decades of advocacy for women and children, is being recognized with a provincial award.
Patti Lessard is among 15 individuals and organizations in Ontario named as the 2020-21 recipients of the Attorney General’s Victim Services Awards of Distinction.

The federal government announced funding Thursday for five organizations in the riding of Nipissing-Timiskaming as part of an effort to address gender-based violence during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Elizabeth Fry Society of Northeastern Ontario – $47,000
Crisis Centre North Bay (Four Elms Emergency Shelter) – $35,000
Nipissing Transition House – $35,000
Mattawa Women’s Resource Centre – $35,000
Community Counselling Centre of Nipissing – $15,000
“These shelters are very important resources in our riding,” Nipissing-Timiskaming MP Anthony Rota said in a statement.
“Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, gender-based violence, including sexual abuse and exploitation, and intimate partner violence was far too common. This unprecedented time has brought with it challenges that many organizations could not manage alone.” ....
