IMPHAL: The Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) of Imphal West on Friday granted bail to the two leaders of Manipur Student Association Delhi (MSAD). The duo was arrested by a team of Manipur police and Delhi police from Chanakyapuri in New Delhi on charges of attempting to promote communal hatred last week. They were subsequently brought to Imphal.
Observing that keeping the student leaders in custody will amount to ruining their career, the CJM has taken into consideration that they are college students in the fifth semester of B.Com, and have examinations from December 13. ....

New Delhi: In yet another punitive action against the Manipur Students’ Association Delhi (MSAD), the BJP-led Manipur government sent a police team to Delhi late last week to take into custody two executive members of the student body.
This action by the chief minister N. Biren Singh government comes in the wake of a public statement released by the students’ body in Delhi opposing the government’s recent decision to introduce Sanskrit as a subject in some schools and colleges in the northeastern state. ....

Manipur: Bail to 2 student leaders held for criticising plan to introduce Sanskrit in state schools


The court has released them with conditions that they should not threaten, contact or induce any of the prosecution witness. They have been asked to make themselves available for interrogation by the police as and when required, and not leave Manipur without prior permission of the court till the trial is over.
On November 20, the MSAD had strongly reacted against the Manipur Education minister’s announcement that Sanskrit would be introduced in selected schools and colleges of the state.
The MSAD alleged that the introduction of Sanskrit was an attempt to impose the language in Manipur in the interests of a particular community. Following this, a group based in Imphal lodged a complaint against the body. They were slapped with section I53A/504/505(2)/34 of the IPC. ....

Two leaders of the Manipur Students’ Association Delhi have been arrested for allegedly spreading “communal hatred”,
The Indian Express reported on Thursday.
Singhajit Thokchom, the secretary general of Manipur Students’ Association Delhi, and Kenedy Moirangthem, its organisation secretary, were arrested from Chanakyapuri area on Monday by a combined team of the Delhi Police and the Manipur Police. They were brought back to Imphal for questioning on Thursday.
“The student leaders have been booked under different sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 153A, for stoking communal hatred,” Imphal West district Superintendent of Police K Meghachandra said. “The student groups went to the extent of using offensive language against a particular community.” ....
