Man who threw pride flag at Lau Pa Sat eatery staff issued 24-month conditional warning


The 47-year-old man who took down a pride flag at a Lau Pa Sat stall counter, threw it at the staff, and shouted at them has been issued a 24-month conditional warning.
He was found to have committed an offence of intentionally causing harassment, alarm or distress under Section 3(2) of the Protection from Harassment Act (POHA).
The resolution to the case was shared in a written reply by Minister for Home Affairs K Shanmugam to a Parliamentary question by Non-Constituency Member of Parliament Leong Mun Wai from the Progress Singapore Party.
Leong had asked for an update on the investigation into the incident. He also asked whether further steps would be taken to deal with such incidents of abuse due to discrimination. ....

Ten years ago, as radio presenter Joshua Simon was about to share a photo and a video on Facebook, he felt nervous. The images were of him, his friends and hordes of other people enjoying the 2011 edition of Singapore s Pink Dot rally, a celebration of the city state s LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community.
Since its inception in 2009 the rally has drawn thousands of supporters and sponsorship from tech giants Google and Facebook, despite gay sex being technically illegal in the country. Under Singapore law (albeit one the government has said it will not enforce), gay sex between men is punishable with a jail term of up to two years. ....

Singapore's handling of Covid-19 pandemic key feature in its human rights report to UN


SINGAPORE - Singapore s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic featured prominently in the country s latest report to the United Nations, submitted as part of a routine review of each member state s human rights record.
During the crisis, Singapore took steps to protect low-income and vulnerable residents, including migrant workers in dormitories, it said, adding that economic and social support measures were also put in place to protect businesses and individuals.
The pandemic has stress-tested all countries politically, socially, and economically, Singapore said in its national report, which is publicly available on the UN website. Singapore s response to the pandemic has demonstrated that we have the social capital to emerge stronger and deal with future crises. ....
