Southern Railway will impose a fine up to ₹ 500 under Indian Railways (Penalties for activities affecting cleanliness on railway premises) Rules, 2012, from persons not wearing face mask/cover on railway premises, including trains.
A statement said that as per the railway board instructions, Southern Railway will take action with immediate effect for six months till further advice.
Southern Railway has appealed to all passengers to wear masks and follow other COVID appropriate behaviour while entering the railway premises, during the train journey and throughout the time they are on the railway premises. ....

The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Saturday directed all the parties involved in the Avaniapuram custodial death case to file their counter affidavits.
The court had taken up the matter suo motu after it was alleged the father of the victim was coerced to withdraw his petition seeking a CBI probe into the incident that took place in 2019.
A Division Bench of Justices T. S. Sivagnanam and S. Ananthi sought the response from the State, the father of the victim and four men Athi Narayanan, Kathir, Loganathan and Ramesh alleged to be behind the withdrawal of the petition. Earlier, the father had informed the court that he was convinced that his son’s death was not a case of custodial death. ....

Southern Railway headquarters has come down heavily on the officials for poor planning and deployment of inadequate and inexperienced workers for taking up commissioning of doubling work between Tirumangalam and Thulukkapatti railway stations that led to massive disruption of train services on March 30 and 31.
This is in contrary to the earlier claim by railway officials that technical glitch had caused detention of nearly 10 express and superfast trains for up to 10 hours on Chennai Egmore-Tirunelveli section March 30. ....

The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Friday dismissed a petition that sought to permit the general public to attend the Chithirai festival on the Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple premises, that will be celebrated from April 15 to April 26.
The court was hearing the public interest litigation petition that was filed by advocate G.D. Manikandan of Karaikudi in Sivaganga district. He challenged the government order that prohibited the public participation in the Chithirai festival this year.
A Division Bench of Justices T.S. Sivagnanam and S. Ananthi observed that the government had taken the decision by considering the welfare of the public, in view of the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. ....
