The ACT Council of Social Service (ACTCOSS) has joined the Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS) as well as ACT disability representative organisations in calling for an improvement in income support for people with disability in a submission to the federal Inquiry into the purpose, intent and adequacy of the Disability Support Pension (DSP) published today.
According to ACTCOSS A/g CEO Craig Wallace: “If someone has a disability or chronic ill-health that prevents them from gaining or maintaining sufficient paid work, they should have access to income at a sustainable level that enables them to put food on the table, buy clothes, pay for transport and afford the many other, often hidden, costs of disability. ....

Planning approves housing for vulnerable women

Proposed design for community housing in Ainslie
YWCA Canberra’s plans to build 10 homes in Ainslie for older women and women escaping domestic and family violence was approved last week by ACT Planning.
Purchased by the not-for-profit from the ACT government more than 30 years ago, the site has hosted numerous community facilities throughout the years but was determined to be of better use as housing for vulnerable women, says YWCA Canberra CEO Frances Crimmins.

The project will include 10 homes – down from the originally proposed 16.
The houses have been designed around the needs of its future occupants, says Ms Crimmins. ....

Former Labor MLA becomes mental health coalition CEO

Bec Cody named Mental Health Community Coalition (MHCC) of the ACT CEO.
FORMER Labor MLA Bec Cody has been named the new CEO of the Mental Health Community Coalition (MHCC) of the ACT.
Before representing the electorate of Murrumbidgee as a Labor backbencher from 2016-2020, Ms Cody was a hairdresser, salon-owner and unionist.
Ms Cody, who has spoken publicly about her own experience with domestic violence and mental health issues, will begin in the role as CEO with the coalition on March 15. She replaces Simon Viereck after he left for a new role at the end of 2020.
Following the announcement, the MHCC ACT board has welcomed Ms Cody’s broad range of skills and warm leadership style, and is excited about this new chapter for the peak body for non-government mental health service providers in the ACT. ....
