Mark McGowan may have repented – but has reminded us of the threat to religious freedom in Australia

Yesterday, the Western Australian government backed down from its decision to cancel a booking made by Australian Christian Lobby to run an event in state-owned ie, taxpayer-funded after originally justifying its actions with the claim the ACL has “views opposing the state government” and that its views “don’t align with the state government”.
The ACL was also told its event could not go ahead at the venue because its views are not representative of the vast majority of Western Australians.
This represents a historical moment, not just in Australian church-state relations, but in Australia’s history as a liberal democracy. What we are seeing is a gang of state-backed ideological thugs determining what may and may not be said in public institutions.    ....

SYDNEY Groups across a wide spectrum reacted with dismay and concern to passage of a law in the Australian state of Victoria to ban “conversion” practices. Some called it an attack on freedom of religion and speech.
Critics say it is so broad in its definitions and the sanctions are so severe that it risks criminalizing people in their homes, workplaces and churches who genuinely seek to help those who ask for their support, as well as Christians and other people of faith. ....

Rome Newsroom, Jan 21, 2021 / 12:00 pm (CNA).- As a self-proclaimed atheist in his early 20s, Private Dillon Beatson said that the only time he spoke of religion was with ridicule. But when his helicopter crashed during a training mission in the Middle East, he found himself crying out to God.
“It is funny how fast and slow it went at the same time,” Beatson said in an interview with Colm Flynn of EWTN News.
“I was holding on to something and we crashed down on the left, and I got launched into the sand. The helicopter was still moving forward. It was pushing me into the sand. The propeller blades were spinning around. It was incredibly loud and I thought: ‘This is it.’ … It was when I called out to God and said: ‘God, please don’t let me die.’” ....

Victoria's conversion therapy bill a 'dramatic overreach of the state' – Catholic World Report

CNA Staff, Dec 10, 2020 / 08:11 pm (CNA).- A bill seeking to ban so-called conversion therapy for sexual orientation or gender identity in the Australian state of Victoria dangerously oversteps the bounds of protecting people from coercive practices, the Archbishop of Melbourne said.
“I encourage every action to protect people from harm. A bill that protected people would have my full support,” Archbishop Peter Comensoli said in a statement.
“The problem is this bill doesn’t merely do what it claims. It targets prayer, and appears to impose silence on people of faith from sharing their beliefs in an open, honest and faithful way. The bill imposes on the right of parents and children to speak plainly and honestly with one another. It robs adults from seeking whatever guidance and pastoral support they seek concerning deeply personal matters,” he said. ....
