Unless the employee agrees, no employer should reduce his or her hours and pay while expecting the same level of production.
President of the Human Resource Management Association of Barbados (HRMAB), Brittany Brathwaite, made that point yesterday following an influx of complaints about the prevalance of the practice.
Speaking during the HRMAB’s Exploring The Options online session, she said to do so without permission would be contrary to the contractual agreement between the employee and employer.
“I do know there has been a flurry of complaints about that, so you really have to manage expectations around how you go about reducing wages. There has been a worrying trend of persons reducing salaries or wages but mandating the same number of hours. One must remember that the baseline of any employment arrangement is your contractual agreement and that agreement is legally binding. (TG) ....
