Mayo football legend Keith Higgins can hardly wait for his return to his county’s hurling side.
After an illustrious career with the Connacht county in the football arena, during which he was honoured with four All-Star awards, Higgins chose to close the door on his big-ball career back in January, a matter of weeks after Mayo’s heart-breaking All-Ireland defeat by Dublin.
But the Ballyhaunis clubman, who won eight Connacht football medals, wasted no time in revealing that he would make himself available to Mayo hurling manager Derek Walsh for this season’s National League and Nicky Rackard campaigns. ....

Recently retired Mayo football star Keith Higgins says he will continue to play hurling for his county in 2021.
Also a decorated hurler, the Ballyhaunis clubman won the Nicky Rackard Cup with his county in 2016 and is the only Connacht player to capture Railway Cup titles in both codes.
He revealed to Midwest Radio yesterday that he intends to continue hurling for the Westerners this having been in contact with manager Derek Walsh.
That s the plan at the moment, he said. I spoke with Derek at the beginning of the week. And yeah, he was happy that I was available, and I d be more than happy to go in. ....

Pat Spillane: 'Why Kerry's Galvin gamble could pay off, my regrets for Keith Higgins, and the plight of Valentia Island GAA club'

Galvin and Keane are both single-minded individuals – so the chances of them working harmoniously together appear remote.
Three things could happen. Galvin could turn down the offer. Or, if he gets involved, it could go spectacularly wrong.
But there is a chance, a chance, that it could actually work.
I ve met Galvin only a couple of times and I don t know him personally. But I ve admired him from a distance.
Like Keane, he is a successful businessman. He is very much his own man and he doesn t suffer fools gladly.
His views on Gaelic football are always very interesting because he thinks creatively. ....

Higgins has no regrets over retirement

Higgins has no regrets over retirement
January 28, 2021
Keith Higgins has no regrets over calling time on his 16-year inter-county football career recently.
The Mayo legend won eight Connacht SFC titles and four All-Star awards during a stellar career in the green and red jersey. He made his Mayo senior debut in 2005, and captained Mayo to the All-Ireland U21 title a year later. The Ballyhaunis clubman was also Young Player of the Year in 2006.
He also played in six All-Ireland SFC finals in total, including the 2016 replay, and was part of the Mayo squad for last month’s decider but didn t feature against Dublin. One of the best defenders ever to grace the game, the 35-year-old reflected on how he came to the decision to retire, when speaking on RTÉ 2FM s Game On this evening. ....
